The story has a historical background. its scents being in Prussia at the time of the invasion by Napoleon. The story opens with the Battle of Jena, through which the heroine, a peasant girl, is left an orphan. 8he then goes to live with her grandfather, and the two have many adventures. Queen Louisa of Prussia also figures in the novel.
