The time is between 1873 and 1874. Dick Stapleton, a young Englishman living on the Cape Coast, suddenly loses his father. He then discovers that his father's manager has been robbing the business for years, and that he (Dick) is penniless. He has to earn his living; becomes manager of a gold mine, and afterwards takes service under General Wolseley and goes gallantly through the Ashanti war.
